Cucurbits grow fast, carry a heavy fruit load and sit under cover a lot of the time — which is a good description of ideal conditions for mildew. Powdery mildew and downy mildew are the defining problems, and in continuous protected houses they arrive early and stay. Underneath that, broad mites distort growing points, thrips and whitefly build in the canopy, and root-knot nematodes limit water uptake exactly when the vine needs it most.
Because the vine is filling fruit continuously, the crop has little slack: symptoms often appear suddenly at peak production, when a nematode-galled or mite-checked plant simply cannot move enough water. Pollination and set are the other lever — cucurbits depend on it, and it is the first thing heat stress takes away.
