This section covers the chemistry behind animal-premise hygiene: what each disinfectant active is, what it is effective against, the contact time it needs, and the species-safety constraints that come with it.

Contact time is the field where most disinfection fails. A product effective in a laboratory suspension test at ten minutes does nothing useful applied to a surface that dries in two, and organic soiling changes the picture again. These pages state the conditions a claim depends on rather than the claim alone.

Species safety is not a footnote here. Animal-premise products are used where animals live, and some of the actives involved — geraniol and peppermint oil in particular — are toxic to cats. No product on this platform is for on-animal use, and nothing in this section should be read as implying otherwise.

Registration and permitted uses vary widely by jurisdiction for disinfectants, more so than for most product categories. The applicable label governs, and it outranks anything written here.

The section also covers smallholder and backyard keeping, where the gap between available advice and useful advice is widest. Guidance written for commercial units assumes equipment, batch sizes and all-in-all-out cycles that a small flock or a few hives do not have, and advice written for hobbyists often skips the parts that actually reduce risk.

Where a page describes a mechanism, it describes what the material does, not what a product achieves. Efficacy claims belong on product pages where they are properly qualified and tied to a registration; this section explains chemistry and stewardship so those claims can be read with some understanding of what sits behind them.
