Root-Knot Nematode Control in Cucumber

Root-knot nematodes are microscopic soil roundworms that swell roots into galls, choking off water and nutrient uptake. This page covers root-knot nematode in cucumber.

Common crops affected

Why it matters

Galled roots can't feed the plant — stunting, wilting, and yield loss follow, and the wounds invite secondary soil pathogens. Nematodes are hard to eradicate once established, so early, targeted control protects the crop and the soil.

When it appears

Symptoms build through warm weather; worst in continuous plantings of susceptible crops and warm, sandy soils.

How to identify it

  • Stunting, yellowing, and midday wilting despite adequate water
  • Swollen galls or knots on the roots when plants are lifted
  • Patchy areas of poor growth, worse in warm sandy soil

How to manage it

  1. Rotate with non-host or resistant crops in known hot spots.
  2. Build organic matter and soil biology.
  3. Use clean transplants; sanitise tools and avoid moving infested soil.
  4. Apply Nematode Control via soil irrigation, before or at planting and where infestation exists.
