In lettuce the leaf is the product, so there is nowhere to hide damage. A blemish that would be cosmetic on a fruit crop is a rejection here, and the harvest window is short — which puts a hard limit on what you can spray and when.
The pressure is consistent: downy mildew in cool, wet, dense canopies; botrytis and gray mold moving through a closing crop; aphids settling deep in the heart where coverage is hardest; thrips and cabbage loopers feeding on the wrapper leaves; and slugs working the base at night. Most of these are canopy problems that get worse exactly as the crop closes up and coverage gets harder.
