Aphid Control in Lettuce

Aphids are fast-breeding sap-suckers that distort growth, coat plants in honeydew, and — most seriously — transmit viruses. This page covers aphids in lettuce.

Common crops affected

Why it matters

Beyond feeding damage they are the top insect virus vectors, and colonies explode within a week, so early control protects both vigour and against virus spread.

When it appears

Flushes of soft new growth, especially under high nitrogen and mild weather.

How to identify it

  • Clusters of small insects on new shoots and leaf undersides
  • Curled, distorted new growth
  • Sticky honeydew and black sooty mould; ants present

How to manage it

  1. Encourage ladybugs and lacewings; avoid excess nitrogen.
  2. Hose off light colonies.
  3. Spray Spider Mite Control at 1:500 on both surfaces; repeat every 3–5 days.
