Common crops affected
Why it matters
Beyond feeding damage they are the top insect virus vectors, and colonies explode within a week, so early control protects both vigour and against virus spread.
When to act
Act at first colonies on growing points, before populations and virus spread build.
What to look for
- Clusters on shoot tips and leaf undersides
- Curled, distorted new growth
- Sticky honeydew and black sooty mould
- Virus-like symptoms from feeding transmission
How to manage it
- Encourage ladybugs and lacewings; avoid excess nitrogen.
- Hose off light colonies.
- Spray Spider Mite Control at 1:500 on both surfaces; repeat every 3–5 days.
