Early Blight Control in Tomato

Early blight (Alternaria) spots and defoliates tomato and potato foliage from the bottom up, exposing fruit and tubers. This page covers early blight in tomato.

Common crops affected

Why it matters

Bottom-up defoliation cuts photosynthesis and exposes fruit to sunscald and tubers to infection, lowering yield and quality; it returns from soil and debris each season.

When it appears

Warm, humid weather; starts on older lower leaves.

How to identify it

  • Dark spots with concentric rings (target/bullseye look)
  • Yellowing around spots on the lowest, oldest leaves
  • Defoliation progressing up the plant

How to manage it

  1. Mulch to reduce soil splash; stake and space for airflow.
  2. Remove infected lower leaves and debris.
  3. Apply Spore Control (1:1,000) at first sign and through warm humid spells.
