What the tropical perennials have in common
The defining feature of this group is the absence of a winter. There is no dormancy, no killing frost and therefore no natural break in any pest or disease cycle — populations carry over continuously and management is a matter of holding a permanent equilibrium rather than clearing a slate each season and starting again.
That continuity is why foliar disease dominates. Black sigatoka in banana and leaf rust in coffee are both diseases of persistent leaf wetness and uninterrupted inoculum, and both are managed by protecting new leaf as it emerges, on a cycle that never really stops. Functional leaf area at bunch fill or at cherry fill is the yield-determining variable, so leaf lost early is yield lost regardless of what is done afterwards.
Below ground, banana carries some of the most serious nematode pressure of any crop — burrowing nematode in particular is a limiting factor in whole production regions, not merely a local problem. Harvest is continuous rather than seasonal in both crops, which has the same practical consequence as it does in berries: residue intervals constrain the programme, because there is almost always fruit on the plant approaching maturity.
