Melons and watermelon depend on strong pollination for well-shaped, well-filled fruit, and they're highly susceptible to powdery and downy mildew and to root-knot nematodes.

Melons and watermelon are cucurbits grown for a fruit whose value is decided almost entirely at ripening, and the crop has an unusually short window in which that value can be protected. Sugar accumulation happens late and depends on the canopy staying functional through fruit fill, so any foliar disease that strips leaves in the final weeks costs sweetness directly, whether or not the fruit itself is ever infected.

That makes powdery and downy mildew the diseases that matter most, and it makes leaf preservation the goal rather than fruit protection as such. Below ground the crop is sensitive to root-knot nematode and to fusarium wilt, both of which show first as midday wilting that recovers overnight and both of which are routinely misread as an irrigation shortfall. Pollination is a second hard constraint: melons need substantial and repeated bee visitation to set fruit that sizes evenly, and poorly pollinated fruit is misshapen and small regardless of how well it is fed afterwards.
