Ten marine ingredients across the range, from well-characterised polysaccharides to extracts identified only by species.
Why marine ingredients are used
Marine organisms live under osmotic, UV and temperature stress, and have evolved protective compounds — sulphated polysaccharides, mycosporine-like amino acids, osmolytes and antioxidants — that transfer plausibly to skin protection. That is a genuine rationale, not just provenance marketing. The weakness is that "algae extract" spans an enormous range of composition and the INCI name rarely tells you what is standardised.
The ones in this range
Ascophyllum nodosum (Vegalab Marine Balancing Toner; also Kelp Boost and Vita Boost on the crop side) — brown seaweed rich in alginates, fucoidans and polyphenols. This is a genuine cross-pillar ingredient, used for different reasons in each.
Laminaria japonica (Youlief Setup Cream, 0.2%) and Laminaria ochroleuca (Youlief sunscreens) — kelps studied for photoprotective and anti-inflammatory activity.
Giant kelp (Macrocystis) in the Marine Balancing Toner, and generic seaweed extract in Comfort Cleansing Milk and Lumina Serum.
Corallina officinalis (Youlief DIA Toning, 0.0032%) — a calcified red alga, mineral-rich.
Red algae (Gelidium) in Vegalab AquaCell — a source of agarose-type polysaccharides used for film-forming hydration.
Spirulina and marine algae extract in Soothing Recovery Gel and Vital Recovery Serum — cyanobacterial, rich in phycobiliproteins and antioxidants.

How to read a marine claim
Species and standardisation are the whole question. An extract standardised to a named polysaccharide or polyphenol content is assessable; "algae extract" at an unstated level is not. Several entries here sit in the tens of ppm, which is a supporting presence.
What does marine and algae extracts not do?
Marine origin confers no inherent superiority. Sulphated polysaccharides are generally large molecules that act at the surface. And mycosporine-like amino acids, sometimes invoked in marine photoprotection marketing, are not UV filters in any regulatory sense — they do not replace sunscreen.
