Antioxidants: resveratrol, ferulic acid, tocopherol and carnosine
Antioxidants work as a network, not as individuals — which is why they are combined, and why the level matters more than the name.
The network idea
Antioxidants regenerate one another. Vitamin C regenerates oxidised vitamin E; ferulic acid stabilises both. This is why combinations outperform single agents and why the classic vitamin C, vitamin E and ferulic acid formulation exists. It also means a long antioxidant list is not automatically better than a short, well-chosen one.
The ones in this range
Ferulic acid, a phenolic acid from plant cell walls, is used mainly as a stabiliser for vitamins C and E while contributing its own activity. Vegalab uses it in Lumina Brightening Cream with encapsulated vitamin C and resveratrol — a coherent network formulation.
Resveratrol, a stilbene polyphenol from grape skin, has antioxidant activity and sirtuin-related interest that connects it conceptually to the NAD+ story. Its practical weakness is poor stability and poor water solubility, so formulation and packaging are decisive.
Tocopherol (vitamin E) is the principal lipid-phase antioxidant, protecting membrane lipids and formulation oils from oxidation. This is where levels matter: Youlief lists tocopherol at up to 0.0004% — 4 ppm — across nine products. At that level it is protecting the formulation, not the skin. Both are legitimate uses, but they are not the same claim, and a page should distinguish them.
Carnosine, a beta-alanyl-L-histidine dipeptide, is an antioxidant with specific anti-glycation activity — it inhibits formation of advanced glycation end products, which is a distinct and interesting mechanism. Vegalab uses it in the Bio-Ferment Essence Toner.
How to read an antioxidant claim
Ask whether the level is a formulation-protecting level or a skin-active level; whether the packaging protects unstable actives; and whether the combination makes network sense or is a list. Antioxidant claims are among the easiest to make and the hardest to substantiate clinically, because oxidative damage is slow and cumulative.
What does Antioxidants: resveratrol, ferulic acid, tocopherol and carnosine not do?
They do not reverse existing damage, they are not sunscreens, and they do not produce visible short-term change. Their case is preventive and long-term, which is honest but less marketable.
