What it is
Two groups of injectables are common in aesthetic practice.
- Neuromodulators are purified botulinum toxin preparations injected into specific muscles. They relax the muscle for a period, which softens the look of lines made by movement.
- Dermal fillers are gels injected beneath the skin to add volume or shape. Many are made from cross-linked hyaluronic acid, which the body breaks down gradually over time.
Neuromodulators are prescription drugs and fillers are regulated medical devices in the United States and Canada. Practitioners use them for the look of lines, volume, firmness, the eye area and neck and contour. This page is part of the professional treatments section.

What the skin goes through
Each injection leaves a small puncture that closes quickly. Swelling, tenderness, redness and bruising at the injection points are commonly described for some days. Bruising is more likely after blood-thinning medication or supplements, which is why injectors ask about them in advance.
A neuromodulator's effect develops gradually over the days after treatment. A filler's shape can look fuller at first and settle as swelling goes down. Because pressure and heat over a fresh injection site are commonly avoided, massage, facials, radiofrequency and mechanical exfoliation wait for the injector's date.
Recovery
The injector's written aftercare governs, and every item on it takes precedence over anything here. Typical instructions cover pressure on the area, lying down, exercise, heat, alcohol and makeup for a short period.
Most signs settle on their own. Some do not wait. Severe or increasing pain, skin that turns pale, dusky or mottled, or any change in vision after a filler needs the injector or emergency care immediately. Swelling of the lips, tongue or throat, or difficulty breathing, needs emergency care. Any reaction you believe involves a skincare product can also be reported through report a reaction.

Caring for skin once it is intact
Once skin is intact, every product goes on with light, flat fingers and no massage over treated areas:
