Eye area and neck
Eye area and neck, in short
The skin around the eyes and on the neck is thinner, has fewer oil glands and moves more than the rest of the face, so fine lines, crepiness and puffiness show there first. What helps is consistent hydration, cooling for morning puffiness, careful placement of eye products, and sunscreen on the neck every day. It is one of the Beauty Science concerns.
What it looks like
- Fine lines at the outer corner of the eye, visible first with expression, later at rest.
- A fine, crepey texture under the eye and on the neck, most visible when the skin is stretched.
- Puffiness under the eyes that is worse on waking and settles by midday.
- A darker-looking under-eye.
- Horizontal lines across the neck and a neck that no longer matches the face in texture or tone.
Why it happens
Thin skin, constant movement. Eyelid skin is among the thinnest on the body, and the muscles around the eye are almost never still. Fine lines form where the skin folds most.
Fewer oil glands. Both areas dry out faster than the rest of the face, and dry skin shows fine lines more.
Sun. The neck and the outer eye are exposed daily and are often missed by sunscreen. Most of the visible change in both areas over time comes from sun exposure.
Fluid. Overnight, fluid collects in the loose tissue under the eye. Salt, alcohol, poor sleep and flights make it worse; it settles as you move through the day.
Structure and pigment. Some under-eye darkness is shadow cast by bone structure or a hollow, and some is pigment or visible vessels. Neither is a skincare problem.
Before choosing products, tell the three apart. Fluid is soft, worse in the morning and better by midday. The look of laxity is a fine, dry crepe that shows most when the skin is stretched flat. Shadow stays the same all day.
What helps
- Cooling for fluid. Cold, from a gel kept in the refrigerator, makes morning puffiness look flatter for a few hours. Caffeine is a common eye-product ingredient studied for the look of puffiness.
- Hydration for fine lines. Hyaluronic acid and other humectants help fine lines look less visible on well-hydrated skin.
- Firmness in appearance. Peptides and adenosine are used for the look of firmness. Retinoids have the longest published record for the look of fine lines, but use them near the eye only as directed, as the skin there irritates easily.
- Sunscreen on the neck and around the eyes, with sunglasses outdoors. See UV filters.
A routine for the eye area and neck
These steps slot into the advanced routine.
Morning
- Cleanse the face and neck together.
- Hyaluronic Skin Repair NanoSerum on damp skin, face and neck, avoiding the eyelid.
- On puffy mornings, Cryo Cooling Gel kept in the refrigerator, a thin layer under the eye outside the orbital rim and along the jaw, for about a minute.
- Bio-Thread Eye and Neck Cream: one rice grain per eye, a pea-sized amount for the neck.
- AquaCell Moisturizer on the face and neck, then a broad-spectrum sunscreen of any brand down to the collarbone.
Evening
Cleanse, serum, Bio-Thread Eye and Neck Cream in the same amounts, moisturizer.
Placement, which matters more than the product
- Ring finger only. It applies the least pressure.
- On the bone of the orbital rim, about 5 mm clear of the lash line. Never on the moving lid.
- Press and release. Do not drag or stretch the skin.
- On the neck, apply upward from collarbone to jaw.
Extra product reaches the wrong place. Eye product placed too close migrates into the eye within hours and leaves a puffy, stinging lid by morning.
Mature skin has its own page: mature skin. For the wider picture of firmness, see aging and firmness.
Professional options
The eye and neck firmness protocol separates fluid, laxity and shadow at consultation, then runs cooling, layering and a light manual sequence over six weekly sessions. The contour and sculpting facial covers the jaw and under-chin. For changes beyond a cream, clinic options include radiofrequency and injectables. A hollow is a volume question and a drooping lid is a surgical one.
Related myths and concerns
When to see a doctor
See a doctor the same day for eye pain, a change in vision, or sudden one-sided swelling, and promptly for any new lump in the neck or a lesion on the eyelid.
Frequently asked questions
How much eye cream should I use?
One rice grain per eye. Place it on the bone of the orbital rim, well clear of the lash line, and press rather than rub. Product placed closer travels onto the lid and into the eye.
Can eye cream fix dark circles?
It depends on the cause. Puffiness responds to cooling and a routine. Shadow from bone structure or a hollow, and color from pigment or visible vessels, are clinic questions.
Should I use my face products on my neck?
Yes. Cleanse, treat and seal the neck with the face, every day, and include it in morning sunscreen. The neck shows change mostly because it is left out.
