For licensed skincare professionals
Dehydrated oily skin protocol
45 minutes. Weekly for three sessions, then every 14 days, four to six in total.
For oily skin that is short of water rather than short of oil. Nothing in this protocol degreases anything, and that is the entire design.
Who this is for
Skin that shines by midday and feels tight in the same minute. Fine surface lines across the cheeks and forehead that flatten out when the skin is gently pinched. Foundation lifting in patches over the center panel while the cheeks look flat. Skin that has recently started stinging on products it used to tolerate.
Oiliness and hydration are separate things, and this is the distinction most clients get wrong. Oil is a lipid on the surface. Hydration is water held within the skin. A face can have too much of the first and not enough of the second at once, which is why "oily" and "tight" are not a contradiction.
Dry skin is a different presentation again: it lacks lipids, feels rough, flakes, and rarely shines. It responds to occlusion. Dehydrated skin responds to water held under a light seal, and treating it with a lipid-heavy protocol will make an oily face feel heavier without touching the tightness.
The stripping loop is what brings these clients in. They read tightness as not clean enough and shine as needing more oil control, so the routine becomes a foaming cleanse twice a day, an astringent toner, a clay mask twice a week, a mattifying primer, powder over the top, and no moisturizer. Every one of those steps takes water out of a skin that is already short of it, the surface looks duller and shines sooner, and the client responds by stripping harder. Point this out once, plainly. Most of them have never been told that the routine is producing the symptom.
Who this is not for
- Active irritation, broken skin, or any open lesion in the treatment area.
- A professional resurfacing treatment within the last 7 days.
- Sunburn or windburn within the last 72 hours.
- Known sensitivity to any ingredient used. Check the full INCI.
- Skin that is oily in the center panel with genuinely comfortable cheeks. That is combination skin: see the combination-skin balancing protocol, PROT-BS-012.
Before you begin
Test it in the chair. Cleanse, leave the skin bare for 10 minutes, then look and ask. Shine returning at the center panel while the client reports tightness on speaking or smiling is the presentation. Pinch a cheek gently: surface lines that appear on release and settle within a second or two are dehydration lines, not fixed lines.
Then take the home routine product by product. Cleanser format matters more than brand, and clients do not volunteer the powder or the primer unless asked.
The protocol
| Step | Product | Amount | Dwell | Technique |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Comfort Cleansing Milk | 2 pumps | 60 sec | On dry skin, slow circles, remove with lukewarm damp cotton. A milk, on oily skin, deliberately. No foam, no cloth, no brush, no hot water. |
| 2 | Comfort Cleansing Milk, second cleanse | 1 pump | 45 sec | Repeat on damp skin. Remove and blot. Leave the skin damp; do not dry it. |
| 3 | Marine Balancing Toner | Saturate 2 cotton rounds | Leave damp | Press over face and neck. Do not wipe. This is the whole of the toning step; no astringent follows it. |
| 4 | Hydrating ProSerum | 4 to 5 ml | 6 min | Massage medium for face, neck and décolletage. Light effleurage only, no heat, no friction. If the slip starts to drag, mist and continue rather than adding more product. |
| 5 | Aqua Infusion Mist | 3 to 4 passes at arm's length | Immediate | Re-wet the whole face before the vial. Every layer from here goes onto visibly damp skin. |
| 6 | Hydrating NanoSerum, sealed vial | 1.0 ml, drawn through the stopper | 5 min | Press in with flat palms across face, neck and décolletage. Do not rub. |
| 7 | Aqua Infusion Mist, then Hydrating NanoSerum second layer | 2 passes, then 0.5 ml | 3 min | Second layer only where surface lines show, usually cheeks, forehead and the outer eye area. |
| 8 | AquaCell Moisturizer | Pea-sized | 2 min | Press and roll over the whole face, center panel included. This is the seal, and skipping it on the oily areas undoes steps 4 to 7. |
No occlusive cream finishes this protocol. This skin is not short of lipids and does not need another one; it needs water held under something light.
The one thing that determines whether this protocol works: the skin never squeaks. Not after the first cleanse, not after the second, not at any point in the session. Every step leaves the surface oil where it is and puts water underneath it. The moment the skin feels squeaky or looks matte-dry on the couch, you have reproduced in 45 minutes the exact thing the client has been doing to themselves for a year, and the hydration steps that follow are spent getting back to level.
Frequency and course
Weekly for the first three sessions, then every 14 days, four to six sessions in total.
The front-loaded start is deliberate. Hydration built in a single session holds for a few days at first and progressively longer as the home routine changes. Reassess at session three: if the midday tightness has not moved, the home routine has not actually changed, and that is the conversation to have rather than a change of protocol.
Aftercare
- No exfoliation, acid, retinoid, scrub or clay mask for 24 hours, and no clay for the first two weeks of the course.
- Daily broad-spectrum sun protection, from any brand. Vegalab does not sell an SPF product.
- Lukewarm water only. Hot water is the fastest way to undo this.
- Blotting paper for midday shine, not powder.
What to expect, and when
Immediately after: skin looks plumper, surface lines are less visible, and the face often looks less shiny by evening. Clients find that last part counterintuitive and it is worth naming before they leave.
Days 2 to 4: makeup sits flatter and lasts longer over the center panel.
By session three: less tightness through the day and shine arriving later, which is the marker clients report without being asked.
By session six: cumulative improvement in the look of hydration, in surface smoothness and in how evenly makeup sits.
Scope: oily skin stays oily, and pore size stays as it is. What changes is that it stops being tight, dull and oily at the same time. And if the stripping routine comes back, so does everything else, usually within three weeks.
Home maintenance
The home routine is not a supporting act here. It is where the result is won or lost.
Morning: Comfort Cleansing Milk or plain lukewarm water, Marine Balancing Toner pressed in, Hydrating ProSerum onto damp skin, AquaCell Moisturizer, sun protection.
Evening: Comfort Cleansing Milk twice, toner, Hydrating ProSerum, AquaCell Moisturizer.
Twice weekly: one 1.5 ml application of Hydrating NanoSerum from a sealed vial onto damp skin in place of the ProSerum. Each vial covers three applications, so a ten-vial box runs about fifteen weeks at twice weekly.
During the day: Aqua Infusion Mist over makeup at the point where the client would otherwise reach for powder.
Change one thing at a time. Clients will not surrender the foaming cleanser at session one. Trade for it: the astringent toner goes today and permanently, the foaming cleanse moves to evenings only. Four changes at once get abandoned in a fortnight; one change survives, and by session three most clients drop the foam themselves because the skin has stopped feeling tight without it.
When to refer
Refer to a physician, and do not continue the protocol, if:
- Tightness is accompanied by persistent redness, heat, swelling or itching.
- The skin stings on plain water at every session despite a gentler routine.
- There are painful lumps under the skin, or lesions that do not resolve.
- Oiliness or dehydration started suddenly, with no change in routine, climate or season.
- The client has started a new oral medication and the change in the skin followed it.
- Nothing has changed after six sessions with a home routine you know has been followed.
Skin that is oily, tight and inflamed at once is no longer a hydration question, and the useful thing you can do for that client is say so.
