Beta-glucan
A polysaccharide with genuine immunomodulatory activity — and a molecular weight that makes topical delivery the central question.
What is beta-glucan?
Beta-glucans are polysaccharides of glucose linked in beta configuration, found in oat and barley, yeast cell walls and some mushrooms. Source matters: oat beta-glucan is predominantly beta-1,3/1,4-linked, while yeast and fungal beta-glucans are beta-1,3/1,6-linked, and the immunological activity associated with beta-glucan is mainly attributed to the 1,3/1,6 forms.
What it does
Two distinct contributions. As a large hydrophilic polymer it is an excellent humectant and film former, giving immediate smoothing and measurable reduction in water loss. Separately, beta-glucan interacts with pattern-recognition receptors on immune cells, and this is the basis for claims about soothing, wound healing and barrier recovery.
The interesting tension is that the immunomodulatory mechanism requires reaching living cells, while the molecule is large — often hundreds of kilodaltons. How far beta-glucan penetrates is not well established independently: the molecular-weight/penetration split is asserted mainly in supplier and industry material. The receptor mechanism is the better-supported part of the story. So a beta-glucan claim depends heavily on which fraction is used, and that is rarely stated.
Where does beta-glucan appear in the range?
Vegalab uses a dual-patented oat beta-glucan in Barrier Repair, Bio-Thread, Cryo Cooling and Soothing Recovery Gel. Youlief uses beta-glucan at up to 0.0203% (203 ppm) in three products, and oat kernel extract in the Setup Cream. Where a specific patented fraction is used, the molecular weight and any penetration data are the things worth stating.
What does beta-glucan not do?
It is not an anti-aging active in the matrix-remodelling sense, and the immune effects demonstrated in laboratory systems should not be presented as clinical outcomes. Oral and topical beta-glucan are entirely different propositions.
