Bakuchiol
Bakuchiol is marketed as a gentler retinol alternative. What it shares with retinoids, what it does not, and how strong the comparison really is.
What is bakuchiol?
Bakuchiol is a meroterpene phenol from the seeds of Psoralea corylifolia. It is not a retinoid — it is structurally unrelated and does not bind retinoic acid receptors — but gene-expression work has shown it influences some of the same downstream pathways, which is the basis of the comparison.
The honest version of the claim
Bakuchiol appears to upregulate some of the same collagen and extracellular-matrix genes that retinoids do, with less of the irritation associated with retinoid receptor activation. That is a genuinely interesting finding rather than pure marketing. What it is not is equivalence: the retinoid evidence base is decades deep with pharmaceutical-grade endpoints, and bakuchiol's is far smaller and largely industry-generated. "Similar direction, much less evidence, much better tolerated" is a fair summary.
Practical use
Bakuchiol is more stable than retinal or retinol and is not notably photosensitising, so it can be used morning or evening and combines readily with acids and vitamin C where retinoids can be awkward. In the Youlief Cica Retinal Ampoule it appears alongside retinal, which is a reasonable pairing: the retinal provides receptor-level activity, the bakuchiol adds complementary pathway effects without adding irritation.
What does bakuchiol not do?
It does not match a well-formulated retinoid for established anti-aging endpoints, and no honest reading of the literature supports presenting it as a replacement for prescription retinoids. It is also not automatically suitable in pregnancy simply because it is not a retinoid — that question belongs with a clinician.
