Alpha-arbutin
A hydroquinone glycoside that inhibits tyrosinase without hydroquinone's regulatory and safety baggage.
What is alpha-arbutin?
Arbutin is hydroquinone with a glucose molecule attached. That glycosidic bond is the point: it makes the molecule stable and far less cytotoxic than free hydroquinone, while allowing slow release of a hydroquinone-like activity in skin. Alpha-arbutin is the alpha-anomer, which is more stable and more active than the beta form found in bearberry extract, and is produced biosynthetically.
How does alpha-arbutin work?
Competitive inhibition of tyrosinase, the rate-limiting enzyme converting tyrosine to melanin precursors. This is upstream interference in melanin synthesis, distinct from tranexamic acid's action on inflammatory signalling and from niacinamide's interference with melanosome transfer — which is why these three are frequently combined, as they are in Vegalab's Brightening line.
The hydroquinone question, handled honestly
Because arbutin can release hydroquinone, the obvious question is whether it carries hydroquinone's concerns. The glycoside is considerably better tolerated and is permitted in cosmetics in jurisdictions where hydroquinone is not, but the mechanism does mean the two are related rather than unrelated. Regulatory limits on arbutin concentration exist in several markets and vary — a page like this should not state a global limit.
What does alpha-arbutin not do?
It does not remove existing pigment, only slows new synthesis, so results take months and require sun protection. It is not a treatment for melasma on its own. And biosynthetic production makes it purer, not more natural in any meaningful sense.
