For licensed skincare professionals
Post-shave comfort protocol
40 minutes. Every two weeks, four to six sessions.
For skin that is abraded by a blade several times a week: hot and tight after shaving, rough along the jaw and neck, with bumps and marks that never get a clear run at settling.
Who this is for
Clients who report burning or tightness that lasts hours rather than minutes after shaving. Visible bumps and uneven texture concentrated on the neck, under the jaw and around the Adam's apple, where the hair grows in more than one direction. Marks left behind where old bumps have resolved. Clients who have already tried three razors and two balms.
This is a comfort and appearance protocol for intact skin. It works on the surface the razor leaves behind. It does nothing to the hair, its direction, or the way it emerges.
Who this is not for
- Any cut, nick, abrasion or open area in the treatment zone. Reschedule.
- Bumps that are tender when you touch them, warm, spreading, or containing pus. Tenderness is the dividing line. Congestion is not tender; an inflammatory presentation is. See When to refer.
- Anyone who shaved within 12 hours of the appointment. Rebook rather than proceed.
- A professional resurfacing treatment within the last 7 days.
- Known sensitivity to any ingredient used. Check the full INCI.
Do not lift, lance, tweeze or extract an ingrown hair. Not with a needle, not with a lancet, not with tweezers, not "just this one". It is outside the remit, it is the most common cause of the marks the client is complaining about, and it is the fastest way to turn a cosmetic appointment into a clinical one.
Before you begin
Assess before cleansing, under even light, with the client's head turned to both sides. The neck rarely shows its actual pattern face-on.
Skip the hot towel. It is a barbering convention, not a treatment step. On skin that flushes after shaving it raises surface temperature at exactly the moment you are trying to bring it down, and it costs you the first twenty minutes of the session. Use a cool damp compress if you want a compress at all.
No steam, no brushes, no rotary devices, no scrubs. Friction is the mechanism of the complaint. Adding more of it is not a treatment.
The protocol
| Step | Product | Amount | Dwell | Technique |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Comfort Cleansing Milk | 2 pumps | 60 sec | Emulsify in the palms. Work the beard area with the grain in straight strokes, not circles. Remove with cool damp cotton. |
| 2 | Marine Balancing Toner | Saturate 2 cotton rounds | Leave damp | Press over the beard area, jaw and neck. Do not wipe. Skin stays visibly damp into step 3. |
| 3 | Cryo Cooling Gel | 5 ml, even layer | 10 min | Apply cool from the fridge if the back bar allows. Cover the whole shaved area including the neck. Remove with cool damp gauze. |
| 4 | Marine Balancing Toner, second press | 1 round | Leave damp | Re-damp the skin after removal. The next two steps go onto damp skin. |
| 5 | Vital Recovery Serum | 0.5 ml | 3 min | Press in with flat palms. No massage over the beard area. Include behind the jaw and down to the collar line. |
| 6 | Soothing Recovery Gel | 3 ml | 5 min | Over the bumpy areas only. Leave in place; do not remove. |
| 7 | AquaCell Moisturizer | Pea-sized | Leave on | Press and roll. Stop at the collar line so it does not transfer. |
The one thing that determines whether this protocol works: where the appointment sits relative to the shave. Book it at least 24 hours after the last shave, and tell the client not to shave for 24 hours after. A client who shaves the morning of the appointment arrives with a freshly abraded surface, and every step lands on it. A client who shaves the same evening has undone the session before it has had a night to settle. Nothing on the trolley compensates for a badly placed appointment.
Total product time is about 25 minutes. The rest is assessment and the shaving conversation, which is where most of the value sits.
Frequency and course
Every two weeks, four to six sessions. Weekly is not better; the skin is being abraded between sessions regardless of what you do, and the recovery interval is the point.
Reassess at session three. If comfort has not changed but the client has also not changed their shaving routine, the protocol is not the variable that failed.
Aftercare
- No shaving for 24 hours.
- No exfoliation, acid or client-owned retinoid on the beard area for 48 hours.
- No alcohol-based aftershave, that day or afterward.
- Daily broad-spectrum sun protection from any brand. Vegalab does not sell an SPF product, and marks left by old bumps darken with sun exposure faster than they fade.
- Cool water on the beard area for the rest of the week. Not hot.
What to expect, and when
Immediately after: the area looks less flushed and feels cooler. Texture is smoother to the hand. This is real and it is short.
By session two: the client reports that the burn after shaving lasts minutes rather than hours. That is the marker worth tracking, because it is the one they volunteer.
By session four to six: fewer visible bumps, a more even-looking jaw and neck, less roughness between shaves.
Scope: this protocol addresses how the shaved area looks and feels. Bumps that keep recurring in the same places despite a changed shaving routine have a cause, and finding that cause belongs with a physician.
Home maintenance
The treatment holds for roughly a week. The shave itself is the daily variable, so the home routine is built around it.
Every shave: warm water on the beard for two to three minutes first, never a dry shave. A single pass with the grain. Do not stretch the skin taut. Rinse cool, blot, do not rub. New blade every three to five shaves.
Straight after the shave, on damp skin: Soothing Recovery Gel, then AquaCell Moisturizer.
Non-shaving mornings: Comfort Cleansing Milk, Marine Balancing Toner, AquaCell Moisturizer, sun protection.
Evenings: Comfort Cleansing Milk, Marine Balancing Toner, Vital Recovery Serum on damp skin, AquaCell Moisturizer.
When the skin is hot: Cryo Cooling Gel, kept in the fridge, for ten minutes.
Tell the client once, plainly, not to pick or tweeze. Then tell them what the marks are: they are what picking leaves behind, and they take months to fade on their own.
When to refer
Refer to a physician, and do not continue the protocol, if:
- Bumps are tender, warm, spreading, or contain pus.
- There is any fever, or the area is painful rather than uncomfortable.
- A single lesion keeps returning in the same place, or does not resolve at all.
- Marks are darkening rather than fading over months.
- The bumps began after a new oral medication.
- Nothing has changed after six sessions and a corrected shaving routine.
Recurrent inflammatory bumps in the beard area are a clinical question with clinical answers, some of them prescription. Saying so is not losing the client; it is the reason they come back for the comfort work afterward.
