Humectants compared

Glycerin, betaine, trehalose, sodium PCA and the rest all hold water — but they behave differently in dry air, and one of them is quietly the best-evidenced ingredient in skincare.

What humectants do

A humectant is a hygroscopic molecule that binds water, drawing it from the atmosphere and from deeper skin layers into the stratum corneum. Humectants are formulated with occlusives because skin hydration is governed by the water-activity gradient between the tissue and the air, and by whether anything on top slows evaporation. The stronger claim — that a humectant alone actively dehydrates skin in dry air — is widely repeated but has no primary study behind it.

The ones in this range

Glycerin is the reference standard and, by weight of evidence, one of the best-supported ingredients in all of skincare — it hydrates, supports barrier recovery, and interacts with aquaporin water channels. Youlief uses it at up to 7.2% across eleven products. It is unglamorous and hard to beat.

Betaine (trimethylglycine) is both humectant and osmolyte, stabilising proteins under osmotic stress. Up to 0.8% in the Youlief range; also in Vegalab's Hydrating line.

Trehalose is a disaccharide osmoprotectant notable for stabilising membranes and proteins during desiccation — the mechanism that lets some organisms survive drying out completely. Present in Vegalab Hydrating and Youlief Peptiderma at 0.1%. It also appears on the crop side of the business, in Brix Boost and Cellular Boost, for the same underlying reason.

Sodium PCA is a component of skin's own natural moisturising factor, derived from filaggrin breakdown — so it is replacing something the skin makes rather than adding a foreign humectant.

Glyceryl glucoside, propanediol, butylene glycol, diglycerin, sorbitol and mannitol complete the group, mostly serving as combined solvent-humectants.

Worth noting: butylene glycol reaches 13% in the Youlief ECW Ampoule and methylpropanediol 8% in the Setup Toner. At those levels these are the solvent system, not incidental.

How to choose

In humid conditions humectant-heavy products perform well. In dry conditions they need occlusion. Layering a humectant serum onto damp skin and sealing it is not a marketing ritual; it is how the mechanism works.
