Bacillus species in soil inoculants
Four Bacillus species appear in Charge BioBoost. What each is understood to contribute, and why consortia are used rather than single strains.
Why a consortium
Single-strain inoculants have a persistent problem: establishment is unreliable across the range of soils, temperatures and existing microbial communities a product will meet. Multi-strain products hedge — different species have different optima, so more of them find conditions they can work in. The trade-off is that consortium products are harder to characterise, and attributing an observed effect to a particular strain becomes almost impossible.
That is worth stating honestly: consortia are a practical response to variability, not evidence of a synergy that has been demonstrated.
The four species
Bacillus subtilis — the best-characterised, with lipopeptide antibiosis, root colonisation, induced resistance and growth promotion. It has its own page.
Bacillus megaterium — one of the largest known bacteria, principally valued for phosphate solubilisation: it releases organic acids and phosphatases that convert bound soil phosphorus into plant-available forms. In soils where phosphorus is present but locked up, this is the most agronomically relevant mechanism in the group.
Bacillus licheniformis — a thermotolerant species producing proteases and antifungal compounds, with reported antagonism toward several soil pathogens and a role in organic matter breakdown.
Bacillus pumilus — associated with growth promotion and induced systemic resistance, and with nematode-suppressive activity in some reports, which is of obvious interest given the rest of the portfolio.
What Bacillus inoculants do not do
They do not fix atmospheric nitrogen — that is a different group of organisms, and the confusion is common. They do not establish reliably in every soil. They do not act quickly, since benefits accrue over weeks as colonisation develops. And spore counts on a label indicate what was formulated, not what will colonise.
How do you read the label?
Colony-forming units per gram and the species list are the useful information. What is usually missing, and what actually determines performance, is whether the strains establish in your soil type — which is why localised trial data matters far more here than product literature.
