Contour actives: arginine, L-carnitine and artichoke
The three-part contour complex, examined honestly. Each ingredient has a real mechanism; the question is whether topical application reaches the tissue it targets.
The complex
Vegalab's Sculpting line pairs arginine, L-carnitine, artichoke extract and caffeine. Each has a defensible rationale and the combination is coherent — but body-contouring is the cosmetic category where the gap between mechanism and demonstrated outcome is widest, and a reference page should be straightforward about that.
Arginine
A semi-essential amino acid and the substrate for nitric oxide synthase. The contour rationale is that nitric oxide production promotes local vasodilation and microcirculation. Arginine is also a humectant and a component of skin's natural moisturising factor, and it is used as a pH adjuster — which is why it appears at 1.3% in the Youlief DIA serums, where its role is more formulation than contour.
L-carnitine
A quaternary ammonium compound that transports long-chain fatty acids into mitochondria for beta-oxidation. In other words, it is required for fat to be burned — which is the basis of the claim. The difficulty is that this is an intracellular mitochondrial process in adipocytes located below the dermis, and topical delivery to that compartment at meaningful concentration is a substantial ask. Oral carnitine has a much clearer evidence base for entirely different endpoints.
Artichoke extract
Cynara scolymus leaf contains cynaropicrin and caffeoylquinic acids, with anti-glycation and antioxidant interest, plus some evidence for effects on skin firmness in the sense of reducing glycation-related stiffening. Youlief uses it at 0.00045% in the Setup Cream — a trace level. Vegalab uses it in the Sculpting line at an unstated level.
What the category cannot claim
Topical products do not reduce body fat. Visible short-term change from contour products is generally attributable to local fluid shift, temporary vasoconstriction or vasodilation, and improved skin surface quality — all real, all temporary, none of it fat loss. Cellulite has a structural basis in the fibrous septae and fat lobule architecture of subcutaneous tissue that topical actives do not address. Presenting firmness and appearance benefits honestly is both accurate and, in the professional market, more credible.
