Sport and Anti-Doping

If a partner's product will be used by competitive athletes, anti-doping status is a formulation constraint, not a footnote. The World Anti-Doping Code prohibits whole categories of compounds, and it captures substances that are not named individually.

How the Prohibited List works

The List is revised annually and organized by class rather than by exhaustive enumeration. Section S0 prohibits any pharmacological substance with no current approval by any governmental regulatory health authority for human therapeutic use, which captures most experimental compounds automatically. Section S2 covers peptide hormones, growth factors, related substances and mimetics, including growth hormone secretagogues, growth hormone fragments and thymosin beta-4 derivatives, and testosterone-stimulating peptides in males. Because the Code applies a similar chemical structure or similar biological effect test, an analog of a named substance is prohibited even when the analog itself is not listed.

Strict liability and contamination

Athletes are responsible for what is found in their samples regardless of intent, which makes supply-chain control a commercial requirement for any brand selling into sport. Contamination cases have arisen from shared equipment, unlisted ingredients and raw-material cross-contact. Programs such as Informed Sport and NSF Certified for Sport test finished lots and audit manufacturing sites, and many teams will not accept a product without one of those certifications. Certification is not a claim that a product is permitted, it is evidence that a specific lot was tested.

What this means for formulation

Three practical rules follow. Segregate production and cleaning validation for any facility that also handles prohibited-class materials. Specify raw materials by supplier and lot with full certificates of analysis, since botanical extracts have been a recurring contamination source. And write labels with the full quantitative composition, because an athlete cannot assess risk from a proprietary blend. Vegalab supports partner-managed certification programs and will document composition to the level the certifier requires.

Where to check status

Status questions belong with the athlete's national anti-doping organization or the Global DRO database, not with a manufacturer. Vegalab does not issue permitted-in-sport opinions on any compound, and no page here should be used as a compliance determination. Formulators should treat any compound with no approval anywhere as prohibited by default under the non-approved substances clause, and should document raw material sourcing well enough that a certifier or a national federation can audit it later. Labels carrying proprietary blends fail that test immediately.

Key facts

  • Section S0 prohibits any pharmacological substance with no current approval by any governmental regulatory health authority for human therapeutic use (WADA Prohibited List 2026)
  • Growth hormone fragments including AOD-9604 and hGH 176-191 are prohibited under section S2.2.3, and thymosin beta-4 derivatives such as TB-500 under S2.3 (WADA Prohibited List 2026)
  • Growth hormone secretagogues and their mimetics, including ibutamoren and ipamorelin, are prohibited under section S2.2.4 (WADA Prohibited List 2026)
  • Kisspeptin and its agonist analogues are prohibited in males as testosterone-stimulating peptides under section S2.2.1 (WADA Prohibited List 2026)
  • Athletes bear strict liability for substances found in their samples (World Anti-Doping Code, Article 2.1)

How our delivery technology applies

For athlete-facing partners, encapsulation helps in one specific way that is easy to overlook: a layered dry particle can be manufactured and filled without the shared liquid-handling equipment that drives most cross-contamination findings, and its composition is fully declarable. Delivery performance matters, but auditability of the batch is what a certifier examines.
