Skin, Hair and Collagen: Oral and Topical Routes Together
Skin and hair actives work from two sides: topically through the stratum corneum, and orally through the blood. Vegalab already formulates the topical side in Beauty Science; this page covers the ingestible side and where the two meet. Some oral collagen dipeptides reach the blood intact; many other actives do not.
Biology of skin and hair aging
Dermal collagen production falls with age and with ultraviolet exposure, and matrix metalloproteinases degrade existing collagen. Hair follicles cycle through growth, regression and rest, and the growth phase shortens with androgen sensitivity and age. Oxidative stress, glycation and reduced NAD+ availability affect both tissues. The approved hair-loss drugs are minoxidil (topical) and finasteride (oral, for men). Everything else in the category is a cosmetic or supplement ingredient with claims restricted accordingly.
What oral actives show
Hydrolyzed collagen releases dipeptides such as prolyl-hydroxyproline that appear in human blood after ingestion, and several randomized trials report changes in skin hydration and elasticity, though study quality varies and many are industry funded. Astaxanthin, a lipophilic carotenoid, has small trials on skin parameters. GHK-Cu is used topically; oral use has little data. Biotin supports hair only in true deficiency, which is rare. Oral carotenoids and polyphenols share a problem: low solubility and oxidation before absorption, which delivery design can address.
Linking to Beauty Science
Vegalab Beauty Science uses encapsulated GHK-Cu, NAD and peptide actives in topical products. Life Sciences extends that work to oral and combined programs: a partner might pair an ingestible collagen or astaxanthin format with a topical serum. The Beauty Science concern pages cover the topical evidence; this page covers what an oral product must overcome. Oral products remain supplements or foods, while topical products remain cosmetics, and each keeps its own claim rules even when sold together as a regimen.
Key facts
- Prolyl-hydroxyproline appeared in human plasma after oral ingestion of gelatin hydrolysate (Iwai et al. 2005, J Agric Food Chem 53:6531)
- GHK-Cu increases collagen and decorin synthesis in fibroblast studies and is used in topical skin care (Pickart and Margolina 2018, Int J Mol Sci 19:1987)
- Topical minoxidil is FDA approved for androgenetic alopecia (FDA approval, Rogaine topical solution 1988)
- Most compounds above 500 Da do not penetrate intact skin in meaningful amounts (Bos and Meinardi 2000, Exp Dermatol 9:165)
How our delivery technology applies
The oral and topical problems differ. Orally, astaxanthin and similar carotenoids are highly lipophilic and oxidize fast; nano-scale encapsulation disperses them and shields them from oxygen. Collagen peptides are already soluble, so the value there is taste masking and stability in liquids. Topically, a multi-layer carrier can hold a hydrophilic peptide like GHK-Cu at the skin surface and release it gradually, which is the mechanism Vegalab uses in Beauty Science.
