Diatomaceous earth once it gets wet

DE works by abrasion and desiccation, which requires it to be dry. Slugs and most garden pests are active precisely when it is not.

The claim

Diatomaceous earth is a natural, non-toxic barrier that kills crawling insects and deters slugs.

What the evidence actually shows

The mechanism is real: DE is a fine silica powder that abrades the cuticle and adsorbs the waxy layer, causing water loss. Against dry-stored products it is a well-established tool.

Moisture destroys it. A Rutgers study of insecticidal dusts against bed bugs found that exposure to steam significantly reduced the efficacy of all three dusts tested, including diatomaceous earth, and concluded that both brief steam exposure and long-term ageing in a moist environment significantly reduce dust efficacy. The authors also cite grain studies in which silica-dust LC50 rose six- to eight-fold moving from 11% to 16% grain moisture — a modest humidity change producing a large loss of potency.

For garden use, University of California IPM notes that dry abrasive barriers heaped an inch high and three inches wide can work, but lose their effectiveness after becoming damp, making them difficult to maintain and not very useful in most garden situations.

Why this matters more than it sounds

Slugs, snails and many soft-bodied pests are active in damp conditions, at night, after rain. The conditions under which you most want a slug barrier are precisely the conditions in which DE stops working. It is not that DE is ineffective — it is that its window of effectiveness and the pest's window of activity barely overlap outdoors.

A safety note that is usually omitted

DE is described as non-toxic, which is true of ingestion but not of inhalation. Fine silica dust is a respiratory irritant and repeated inhalation is a genuine occupational concern. Use a mask when applying it, and prefer food-grade over pool-grade, which is calcined and contains far more crystalline silica.

What to do instead

Reserve DE for dry, sheltered situations — indoors, stored products, under cover. For outdoor slug pressure use iron phosphate baits, trapping, and shelter removal.
