Perimeter Barrier for Ants and Cockroaches

A perimeter program works when it combines exclusion, sanitation and targeted treatment. Sprays alone rarely hold, and repellent sprays can scatter some ant colonies into more nests. Start with inspection, fix entry points and moisture, then treat bands and harborage with labeled products or baits.

Inspect and identify

Identify the species first. Carpenter ants, pavement ants, odorous house ants and Pharaoh ants respond differently to baits and sprays. American and Oriental cockroaches live outdoors and in drains and enter from the perimeter; German cockroaches live almost entirely indoors and need an interior program. Trace trails to entry points: utility penetrations, weep holes, door sweeps and gaps under siding. Note moisture sources, mulch against the wall, and vegetation touching the structure.

Exclude and remove resources

Seal gaps with caulk or mesh, fit door sweeps, and screen vents. Pull mulch and plantings back from the foundation to leave a dry strip. Fix leaks and improve drainage. Store food, pet food and garbage sealed. These steps lower the population the treatment has to handle and make any residual last longer on a drier surface. Trim tree limbs and shrubs that touch the roof or walls, since ants use them as bridges into the structure.

Treat bands and harborage

For ants, baits placed on active trails are usually the first choice, because foragers carry the active back to the colony. Band treatments at the foundation and around entry points, with a labeled product, reduce new entry. For perimeter cockroaches, treat harborage such as drains, voids and mulch beds.
