Broiler House Biosecurity

Broiler houses run all-in, all-out cycles of roughly five to eight weeks, and most pest and pathogen control is decided in the few days of downtime between flocks. Litter management, darkling beetle timing, water line cleanout and verified disinfection set up the next flock.

Pressure points in the cycle

Reused litter carries darkling beetles, coccidial oocysts and bacteria from one flock to the next. Beetles concentrate under feeders and migrate into walls when birds leave. Water lines accumulate biofilm fed by vitamins and additives. Flies build up in wet litter near drinkers. Rodents move in through gaps and feed spills. Wild birds and people are the main entry routes for avian influenza and other introduced pathogens, which is why entry controls come first.

The downtime window

Treat beetles along walls and posts as soon as birds are removed, before litter cools. Remove or treat litter by windrowing or composting to reduce beetles, oocysts and bacteria. Dry clean, wash with detergent, then disinfect with a registered product at label contact time. Flush, descale and sanitize water lines. Allow drying time, then swab surfaces before placement. A short downtime compresses each step, so planning matters more than chemistry.

During grow-out

Keep litter dry by managing drinker height and pressure and ventilation. Maintain a measured water sanitizer residual at the end of lines. Monitor beetles with tube traps and flies with spot cards. Enforce footbaths or boot changes and dedicated clothing at each house. Most treatments cannot be used with birds present; check each label for occupied-house use. Record water use daily; a sudden drop is often the first sign of a blocked or contaminated line.

Key facts

  • Darkling beetles and flies are the principal arthropod pests of broiler litter systems (Axtell and Arends 1990, Annual Review of Entomology 35:101)
  • Coccidiosis control in broilers depends on anticoccidial programs or vaccination (Chapman 2014, Poultry Science 93:501)
  • Poultry biosecurity principles include isolation, traffic control and sanitation (USDA APHIS, Defend the Flock)

How our delivery technology applies

The broiler downtime window is short, so every material must work at the concentration and time available. Vetpure's stabilized, nano-encapsulated chlorine dioxide powder dissolves to at least 98% pure ClO2 and holds strength for up to one month, so a farm can prepare solution once for line cleanout and surface disinfection across several houses. For beetles, residual encapsulated contact actives are a pipeline direction, not a current label.

Integrators can request a downtime program review built around Vetpure.
