Glycine betaine

One of the best-evidenced osmoprotectants in plant science, and a rare case where the biostimulant mechanism is genuinely settled.

What is glycine betaine?

Glycine betaine — trimethylglycine — is a quaternary ammonium compound accumulated by many plants, bacteria and animals in response to osmotic stress. Some crop species accumulate it naturally under drought or salinity; others, including several important crops, accumulate little or none, which is the rationale for applying it.

How does glycine betaine work?

It is a compatible solute: it accumulates in the cytoplasm to high concentrations without disrupting enzyme function, maintaining cell turgor and water balance under osmotic stress where inorganic ions would be damaging.

Beyond osmotic balance it stabilises protein structure and membrane integrity under stress, and protects the photosynthetic apparatus — particularly photosystem II and the enzymes of carbon fixation — which is why treated plants often maintain photosynthesis under stress conditions where untreated plants shut down.

This is unusually well characterised for a biostimulant ingredient. The mechanism is established, the effect is reproducible under stress, and it does not depend on soil biology or conversion.

What does glycine betaine not do?

Effects appear under stress and are minimal in unstressed, well-watered conditions — so a trial in good conditions will show little, and that is expected rather than a failure. It does not increase yield potential; it protects yield against loss. It is not a substitute for irrigation or for salinity management. And timing matters: applied before or at the onset of stress it works, applied after severe damage it does not reverse it.

Is glycine betaine safe?

Very low concern. It is a normal metabolite in plants, animals and humans — betaine is also used as a human dietary supplement and, as noted on the beauty side of this library, as a cosmetic humectant. No residue issues, low ecotoxicity, and no re-entry considerations beyond ordinary handling.

Where does glycine betaine appear in the range?
