"Non-comedogenic" on a label

The familiar 0–5 comedogenicity ratings come from an assay in an animal that lacks functional facial sebaceous glands and does not get acne.

The claim

A product labelled non-comedogenic will not clog pores or cause breakouts.

What the evidence actually shows

There is no standardised test and no regulatory oversight, so any product may carry the label.

The familiar 0-to-5 ingredient ratings circulating online derive from the rabbit ear assay. A 2025 review in JAAD Reviews covering the literature from 1972 to 2025 sets out why that is a problem: rabbits lack functional facial sebaceous glands and do not develop acne vulgaris, so what the assay measures is closer to irritation than comedogenesis. Results are inconsistent with human skin.

A foundational critique in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology added the second structural flaw: the comedogenic potential of a single ingredient does not establish the comedogenicity of the finished product containing it. Concentration, vehicle and the rest of the formula all matter. An ingredient rated 4 out of 5 at high concentration in mineral oil tells you very little about a serum containing 0.5% of it.

What this means for the ingredient lists people share

Those "comedogenic ingredient" charts are built on the rabbit assay applied to individual ingredients — both flaws at once. They are not a reliable guide, and following them means excluding materials that are fine for you while assuming safety in products that are not.

What to do instead

Your own skin is the only valid comedogenicity test for you. Introduce one product at a time, give it several weeks, and judge the finished formula rather than its ingredient list. If you are acne-prone, the ingredients with actual evidence for reducing lesions — salicylic acid, retinoids, benzoyl peroxide, azelaic acid — matter far more than avoiding a label.
